Carlebben First Aid & Survival: Your Wilderness Adventure Guard
Product Description
Burns: For burn treatment, immediately cool the burn with tepid or cool water, regardless of the burn’s severity. Continue flushing the area for up to 10 minutes. Avoid using ice, ointments, butter, or other “home remedies.” Remove any clothing or garments from the affected area to reduce contact time with hot items. Cover the burn with a clean, dry cloth, towel, or blanket to protect it and minimize pain. Seek medical attention if the burn exceeds the size of the victim’s hand, or if the victim is a child or elderly person.
Fractures: - Immobilize the Injured Area: If you suspect a bone is broken in the neck or back, keep the person as still as possible. For limb fractures, immobilize the area with a splint or sling. - Apply Cold: Wrap an ice pack or bag of ice cubes in a cloth and apply it to the injury for up to 10 minutes at a time. - Treat for Shock: Help the person into a comfortable position, encourage rest, and offer reassurance. Cover them with a blanket or clothing to keep them warm. - Call 911 if: The person is unconscious, not breathing, has a broken bone in the head, neck, or back, the fractured bone has pierced the skin, or there is severe bleeding.
Bleeding: - For Severe Bleeding: Remove any clothing or debris from the wound, but do not remove large or deeply embedded objects. Avoid probing or cleaning the wound. Place a sterile bandage or clean cloth over the wound and press firmly with your palm to control the bleeding. Maintain pressure until it stops. Secure the bandage with adhesive tape or continue applying pressure manually. If possible, elevate the injured limb above the heart. Help the injured person lie down on a rug or blanket to prevent heat loss. - Tourniquets: Use a tourniquet for life-threatening bleeding from a limb. Inform emergency personnel how long the tourniquet has been in place when they arrive. Call 911 for severe bleeding that you cannot control.
Choking: - Perform Abdominal Thrusts (Heimlich Maneuver): Stand behind the person with one foot forward for balance. Wrap your arms around their waist and tip them slightly forward. If a child is choking, kneel behind them. Make a fist and position it just above the person’s navel. Grasp the fist with your other hand and press hard into the abdomen with a quick, upward thrust. Perform between six and ten thrusts until the blockage is dislodged. - If Alone: Perform back blows and abdominal thrusts before calling 911. If another person is present, have them call for help while you administer first aid. - If Unconscious: Start CPR with chest compressions and rescue breaths.
Resuscitation: 1. Place the person on their back on a firm surface. 2. Kneel beside their neck and shoulders. 3. Position the heel of one hand over the center of the chest, between the nipples. Place the other hand on top and keep your elbows straight. Use your body weight to push down on the chest, compressing it at least 2 inches but no more than 2.4 inches deep. Perform compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute. 4. If untrained, continue compressions until there are signs of movement or emergency personnel arrive. Trained individuals should proceed to open the airway and provide rescue breaths.
